Hour 8:00: you leave the house with perfect make-up. 1pm: the foundation has sagged on your nose, the shadow has gathered in the crease of your eyelids and there's no trace of blush. Sound familiar?
As a cosmetologist, I spend long hours in the salon, often on the move, under strong lamplight and in contact with steam. My make-up does not have a light life, and yet it has to look professional and fresh from the first client to the last. Over the years I have developed a system that works.
Today I'm going to share with you 5 key rules on how to take care of your morning make-up so that it lasts like... a professional uniform.
1 Foundation: Canvas Must Be Smooth
The most expensive foundation will not look good on neglected skin. The longevity of make-up starts the day before.
- Exfoliation: Do a gentle enzyme scrub once a week. It will remove dry cuticles where foundation „hooks” and weighs down.
- Moisturisation: This is an absolute must. In the morning, before make-up, apply a light moisturising serum (e.g. with hyaluronic acid) and a cream matched to your skin. Wait a minimum of 5 minutes for the products to „blend” into the skin. Trying to apply foundation on top of a still wet cream is a guaranteed disaster.
2. The base is your best ally
If your skin tends to get oily or „eat up” your foundation, primer (make-up base) is your essential.
- Oily/mixed skin: Look for a mattifying or pore-smoothing base. Only apply it in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin).
- Dry skin: Choose a moisturising or illuminating base to give your skin a healthy glow and prevent dry areas from being highlighted.
3. Less is More (Application Technique)
This is the biggest mistake I see. In an attempt to get longevity, we apply a thick layer of foundation. The result? A „cakey face” (cakey face) that cracks at the first better facial and looks old.
- Thin Layers: The secret is to build coverage in thin layers. Apply one minimal layer of foundation all over your face. Then, only in the areas that need it (blemishes, capillaries), add a second, patting it on with a sponge.
- Stamping, not rubbing: Use a damp sponge and pat (stamp) the products on. Rubbing with a brush or fingers only rubs off the product and irritates the skin.
4. „Baking”, i.e. Strategic Fixation
For make-up to become „waterproof” and last a day, it needs to be fixed.
- Dry Powder: After applying foundation and concealer, reach for transparent loose powder. Gently dust it all over your face. For areas that tend to look shiny (under the eyes, sides of the nose, chin), you can apply a light „baking” powder - apply more powder and sweep off any excess after 2-3 minutes.
- Setting Spray (Fixing Mist): This is the „hairspray” for your make-up. Once you have finished all of it (powder, blush, bronzer), spray a mist over your face. This will seal all the layers together, take off any excessive powderiness and „glue” the make-up to the skin for hours.
5. Professional Image is the Whole Story (My Secret)
In my profession, make-up is part of the image. Working with clients in the beauty industry, I need to look aesthetically pleasing and professional. Flawless make-up is one thing, but what about the rest?
Imagine a beautician with perfect make-up, but in a pulled-out t-shirt or old apron. The whole effect is gone.
Therefore, for me, the secret of image longevity also lies in the outfit. High-quality cosmetic clothing, which is perfectly tailored, breathable and made from premium materials, acts as a „setting spray” for my authority. Modern scrubs in stylish colours are not only comfortable, but show the client that attention to detail and aesthetics is a priority for me - both in my make-up and in my working standards.
Lasting make-up is the sum of the small steps: care, a good base, technique and fixation. When you combine these tips, your morning make-up will easily last until your evening make-up removal.
